ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON RELEASES TO THE ENVIRONMENT Report 1: Towards an evidence-based regulatory system for GMOs

چکیده
The Advisory Committee of Releases into the Environment (ACRE) is an independent advisory committee composed of leading scientists and technical experts. Our main function is to give statutory advice to UK ministers and ministers in the Devolved Administrations on the risks to human health and the environment posed by the release and marketing of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This report is one of three in which we consider the regulatory framework in which we operate. We first registered concern about fundamental principles of the legislation in our 2007 report: „Managing the Footprint of Agriculture: Towards a Comparative Assessment of Risks and Benefits for Novel Agricultural Systems‟. This report was designed to place the advice we issued on the UK‟s farm-scale trials of herbicide-tolerant crops into a wider context; it highlighted inconsistencies in the approach to GMO regulation. Our latest reports reflect our concern that the operation of this regulatory system is becoming increasingly untenable.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON RELEASES TO THE ENVIRONMENT Report 2: Why a modern understanding of genomes demonstrates the need for a new regulatory system for GMOs
Classifying the regulatory status of organisms produced by new techniques is becoming increasingly difficult, because the definition of a GMO in the Directive was drafted at a time when many of these techniques had not been conceived. Technology in molecular genetics is developing rapidly, to the extent that plants and other organisms can be modified in ways whereby the use of recombinant techn...
متن کاملImplementation of a Health Policy Advisory Committee as a Knowledge Translation Platform: The Nigeria Experience
Background In recent times, there has been a growing demand internationally for health policies to be based on reliable research evidence. Consequently, there is a need to strengthen institutions and mechanisms that can promote interactions among researchers, policy-makers and other stakeholders who can influence the uptake of research findings. The Health Policy Advisory Committee (HPAC) is on...
متن کاملGMOs: A Good but Battered Means for Sustainable Production Intensification
FAO promotes Sustainable Production Intensification (SPI), which consists of a technology menu for optimizing crop production per unit area, taking into consideration the range of sustainability aspects including potential and/or real social, political, economic and environmental impacts. The author suggests that Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) cropping is not only well aligned to SPI but a...

This report has been drawn up by a subgroup of the Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE) in response to requests by the Secretary of State and the Agriculture and Environment Biotechnology Commission to assess the wider implications of the Farm-Scale Evaluations (FSEs) of genetically modified herbicide tolerant (GMHT) crops. ACRE's remit is currently limited to GMOs and the r...
متن کاملRegulation of Genetically Modified (gm) Sugarcane in Australia
GENETICALLY modified (GM) sugarcane, as with any other genetically modified organism (GMO), must be approved by regulatory authorities before it can be released in Australia. Growing GMOs is regulated by the Gene Technology Regulator under the Gene Technology Act 2000. The object of the Act is ‘to protect the health and safety of people, and to protect the environment, by identifying risks pose...
